What is a Registered Massage Therapist?




A Registered Massage Therapist is the professional designation for a person who has trained and completed competency-based education at educational institutions recognized by the Government of Ontario, in Canada. The regulated health profession known as Massage therapy should be performed by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT or MT).


To be able to use these terms Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) & Massage Therapist (MT) in Ontario this health care Professional has studied the sciences of anatomy, physiology, pathology, physical assessment,   & neurology.


As well as specialised massage therapy treatments, and ethics, 150 clinical hours.


These competences must be in place before they can write the examinations and have the term "registered" by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (the College) in accordance with the Regulated Health Professions Act and the Massage Therapy Act;


Once having the prerequisite training and education the ongoing maintenance of their registration by participating in continuing education and a Quality Assurance Program that assists them in the maintenance of high professional standards and quality care of their clients.Only members of the College are permitted to use the title, Massage Therapist or Registered Massage Therapist or the designation of RMT or MT.


The Legislation    The profession of massage therapy is regulated in the Province of Ontario under the Regulated Health Professions Act and the associated legislation, the Massage Therapy Act.

In the regulated provinces in Canada, Massage Therapists participate in a provincially recognized Quality Assurance Programme.   This programme oversees the course contents that one can count towards their CEU Continuing Education Credits. This assures RMT’s (and other regulated professions) maintain a high professional standards and quality care of their clients.   In Ontario, WSIB, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, auto insurance and some Extended Health Care plans cover massage treatments.
